Volleyball in the USA is booming, attracting thousands of athletes from all over the world every year. American universities offer an exceptional framework for combining sport and study, thanks to top-tier infrastructure, professional coaching and ultra-competitive championships. With the possibility of obtaining athletic and academic scholarships, players can play in prestigious divisions such as the NCAA, NAIA or Junior Colleges, while preparing for their future. Whether you want to reach the highest level or live a unique experience, college volleyball in the USA represents a real opportunity.
In 2019, Chloé Melis left France for the United States and began her studies at the College of Central Florida. After the school’s sports programs closed, she joined Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, where she earned her Associate Degree in Art with honors.
She then continued her studies at Fresno Pacific University, California (NCAA D2, PacWest Conference), where she graduated in May 2023 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. 🎓
In December 2023, Chloé joined (formerly) the Athletic USA agency, headed by Claire Chanay, and specializes in developing the volleyball sector.
“Studying and playing volleyball in the United States is very different from France. First of all, on campus, everything is centralized: classes, housing, sports, catering… It’s extremely practical!
Sport is an important part of university life. As an athlete, you’re really valued, and the infrastructure is impressive. Everything is really bigger here.
Courses are also organized differently. Exams are mainly MCQs, which is often simpler than the French system. Whether it’s studies or sport, everything is organized during the day, which leaves the evenings free.”
“Volleyball here is quite different from European volleyball, both in terms of the system of play and certain rules (such as unlimited changes and the fact that the ball can touch the ceiling). The weeks are punctuated by training sessions, weight training and physiotherapy sessions. We have two hours of training a day, four hours of weight training a week, and I see the physio 3 or 4 times a week to be physically ready for the start of the season.
Here, everything is big: the houses, the cars, it’s like in American movies. You see the American everywhere. The classes are quite interesting, although at first it was hard to stay focused for three hours. As for the food, it’s okay, even if the meal times are different, but you get used to it!”
Women’s college volleyball in the USA is growing in popularity, with historic attendance records set in 2024. Teams such as Nebraska, Wisconsin and Texas drew thousands of spectators, creating an electric atmosphere in the halls and confirming the popularity of the sport. These impressive figures now rival other major college sports, underlining the appeal of women’s volleyball.
This growth reflects the growing importance of college volleyball in the American sporting landscape. Top-level performances, enthusiastic fans and the interest of the media and sponsors have made the sport an unmissable phenomenon.
Women’s volleyball has thus established itself as one of the most dynamic and promising disciplines on the university circuit.
Giving young athletes the means to fulfill their potential in life through their sport.
